Gemma receives the golden boot

Posted: 03 November 2011
Gemma Bryan was presented with her Umbro F.A. Women’s Premier League Golden Boot Award on Sunday, by Women’s Football Committee Chairman, Steve Sutherland, after shooting her way to being top goalscorer in all the Premier League Divisions last season.

Bryan bagged 19 goals in just 17 appearances last term, helping to propel the Charlton Women’s team to the Southern Division title and promotion to the National Division.

She added seven goals in as many cup games, giving her an impressive overall total for the campaign

Gemma said: “It was a good season last year, getting promotion and it is nice to get the top scorer award as well. It is nice but there are 11 players to a team and they should take just as much of the credit.”

She has already scored a further six goals in nine games this term but was disappointed with the 2-0 loss to Coventry last weekend, adding: “It was frustrating because we had got two wins and two clean sheets.

“We knew what we were going to get from Coventry. Paul said they would be very physical and we found it very difficult out there.

“We knew what to expect from them and how to combat it but couldn’t put it into action. They had a solid back four, who have conceded one of the least amount of goals in the league and there is a reason for that.

“They are one of the hardest teams I have come up against. They attacked as a team and defended as a team and we didn’t.”

Women’s Football Committee Chairman, Steve Sutherland said: "I was delighted to present Gemma with her much deserved award.

"She has been in outstanding form for us and she played a huge part in our success in winning the league last year.

"She’s a talented player who has a very bright future in the game."
